OK… Your probably asking… “I’ve seen the founding members on the about page, now I want to know what you will be doing in Africa and what is GoGetters?”
GoGetters are a collective of young professionals who believe that encouraging entrepreneurs from the diaspora, and the West, can bring local benefits and help drive Africa towards the direction it most desperately needs. However, it must be dealt with and managed effectively to ensure these benefits become a reality, and we know this can only be achieved through experimentation.
“GoGetters favour experimentation over elaborate planning.”
Currently we are launching our pilot project, we have 8 founding members all traveling on different dates to different locations, on an adventure to discover opportunities, conduct research, validate ideas, and find out what works and what doesn’t. Also, it’s about taking the first step into developing deeper relationships and learning through the act of doing. The below outputs will aid us in achieving these outcomes.
Ghana and Nigeria University WorkshopWe will partner up with leading universities, university societies, investors, government officials, business advisors and entrepreneurs to deliver a technology start-up workshop.
Kenya and maybe Sierra Leone Startup WeekendWe will team up with Startup Weekend to bring developers, designers, marketers, product managers and startup enthusiasts together to share ideas, form teams, build products and launch startups. The program begins with open mic 60-second pitches that result in the formation of small teams around the best, most viable concepts. Teams spend Saturday and Sunday focused on customer development, validating their ideas and building prototypes, with the help of experienced mentors. On Sunday, teams demo their products and receive valuable feedback from a panel of experts.
South AfricaWe will not organise any events, but we will attend high profile events like Tech4Africa and One Young World. Also, we will spend time meeting entrepreneurs and investors, finding out what is happening on the ground.
OutputsWhilst on the ground we will shoot a video documentary of our adventure, which will dispel the misconceptions, show the 2013 realities of each country visited, and allow us to bring our viewers on the adventure with us. Also, we will release written and video blogs to give viewers an update.
